Car accidents can cause a torn rotator cuff. This type of injuries or comment in rear end collisions where you see the collision about to occur in your rearview mirror and you grab steering wheel to brace for contact. Insurance companies will often claim that a torn rotator cuff is caused by degenerative condition or normal wear and tear. If this is the case, you will need an experienced car accident attorney to help with your claim.

What is a rotator cuff?

The rotator cuff is for muscles and tendons this rancher shoulder joint. The rotator cuff allows your shoulder the wide range of motion. The rotator cuff allows you to perform many of your everyday tasks, including things as simple as lifting your arm. Injury to your rotator cuff can dramatically limit your ability to work and enjoy the activities of daily life.

What are the symptoms of a torn rotator cuff?

  • A torn rotator cuff will cause painful symptoms. These include:
  • Sudden and severe pain at the top or outsides the shoulder;
  • radiating pain down the arm.
  • Limited range of motion.
  • Popping or clicking sound while moving your arm.
  • Weakness in the shoulder.

How is a torn rotator cuff diagnosed?

The doctor will take a medical history and ask you about the pain you are having in your shoulder. The doctor will evaluate your range of motion and perform other testing to determine whether your symptoms and condition are consistent with a torn rotator cuff. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor will typically order an MRI of the shoulder, which will detect the existence and severity of a rotator cuff tear.

What treatment are available?

Treatment you receive will depend on the severity of the tear. If your tear is small, physical therapy and stretching may resolve your pain. You may also be given injections in the shoulder to temporarily reduce your pain. Your care is larger or does not respond to physical therapy and injections, you may need surgery.  Surgery could include an open repair where a surgeon opens up shoulder and moves bone spurs and repairs the rotator cuff. Sometimes surgery can be done arthroscopically without opening up your shoulder.

Will I have a permanent problem with my shoulder?

Some people do have permanent problems from a rotator cuff tear. Anytime surgery is required, the outcome is uncertain.
